Kenneth has reinterpreted the AIDS ribbon to mark the discovery of the virus 30 years ago. Watch his CNN interview here.

AIDS Walk 2011:
AIDS... WALK IT OFF

We were proud to partner with amfAR to sponsor the return of Larry Kramer’s powerful 1985 masterwork of love, anger and pride. The production won The Best Revival of a Play at the Tony Awards. Kenneth and the CEO of amfAR, Kevin Frost, participated in a Q&A session directly after one of the play’s performances and we also created the play’s official T-shirt.
THE NORMAL HEART.
IT"S A COMING OF RAGE STORY.

  2010

AIDS Walk 2009:
ACT POSITIVE AND THINK NEGATIVE.

  2008

Since 1998, over 3,500 Kenneth Cole associates have participated in AIDS Walks in 18 cities raising over $650,000 for the cause.
WE ALL WALK IN DIFFERENT SHOES.

Kenneth Cole launches the AWEARNESS book to share the inspiring stories of Change Agents – those courageous individuals who recognize a problem and strive to become the solution.

During the Elliot Spitzer prostitution scandal, this billboard reinforced the importance of practicing safe sex.
SOME PROSTITUTION RINGS ARE SAFER THAN OTHERS.

Our Spring 2008 national ad campaign celebrated diversity and recognized those individuals who had the courage to be true to themselves. This ad featured Regan Hofmann, the Editor-in-Chief of Poz Magazine.
WE ALL WALK IN DIFFERENT SHOES.

AIDS Walk 2007:
WALKING FOR AWEARNESS.

By using a stencil and a power washer, we created these messages in New York and LA by cleaning the sidewalks. It’s not illegal to clean the floor.
STAY CLEAN, GET TESTED.

  2006

This campaign ran in New York and London.
WE’RE FORGETTING AIDS. Over 60% of New Yorkers still practice unsafe sex. (The statistic was even higher in the UK.)

This is the campaign we wanted to run, but it was rejected by the MTA.
BEWARE OF TERRORIST CELLS. Over 60% of New Yorkers still practice unsafe sex.

AIDS Walk 2006:
EVERY YEAR IS A YEAR TOO MANY.

  2005

Kenneth becomes Chairman of the Board of amfAR. Kenneth conceptualized and spearheaded the WE ALL HAVE AIDS campaign - the largest ever public service AIDS awareness initiative with the goal of communicating the notion that if AIDS exists anywhere, it essentially exists everywhere, and if anyone is infected, we are all affected.

This ad featured in our Fall 2005 national advertising campaign. AIDS DOESN’T KILL STYLISH PEOPLE if they use a condom.

  2004

This ad featured in our Fall 2004 national advertising campaign. IN THE TIME IT TAKES TO READ THIS, ANOTHER PERSON WILL HAVE BEEN INFECTED WITH HIV. ARE YOU PUTTING US ON?

This ad featured in our Spring 2004 national advertising campaign. 95% OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WITH HIV DON’T KNOW THEY HAVE IT.ARE YOU PUTTING US ON?

  2003

This ad featured in our 20th Anniversary Fall 2003 national advertising campaign. As you can see, it was a more subtle reference to safe sex than our usual approach: TAKING THESE PANTS OFF TOOK ABOUT 3 SECONDS, MAKING THEM TOOK SIGNIFICANTLY LONGER. BE SAFE.

  2001

This message featured in our Fall 2001 catalog.
THINK AIDS IS NO LONGER A THREAT? DREAM ON.

LATEST AIDS STATISTICS: 0,000,000 VACCINATED.

100 PEOPLE CONTRACT HIV EVERY 10 MINUTES. TO BE AWARE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT YOU WEAR.

  1996

On behalf of amfAR we tried to help people realize that AIDS was not just someone else’s problem:

Sometimes, the positive approach isn’t the best option.
THINK NEGATIVE. SAY NO TO HIV.

In a grassroots effort to help amfAR reach a support group with minimal disposable income, we decided to speak directly to, or rather on, the disposable income.

  1995

WEAR A RUBBER sole.

  1994

THESE DAYS, TOO MANY CHILDREN ARE FOLLOWING IN THEIR PARENTS’ FOOTSTEPS.

  1993

Five years after the original ad ran, we had to make a small change that made a big impact. THIS YEAR, BECAUSE OF AIDS, THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS WON’T LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO FILL THESE SHOES.

Sometimes, no words are needed.

  1992

IF WE TOLD YOU A SHOE COULD HELP FIND THE CURE FOR AIDS, WOULD YOU BUY IT?

  1988

The AIDS epidemic further infiltrated our lives, and redefined our future. THIS YEAR, BECAUSE OF AIDS, HUNDREDS OF AMERICANS WON’T LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO FILL THESE SHOES.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH READING THIS MAGAZINE, AIDS WILL HAVE EMPTIED ALL OF THESE.

  1987

We didn’t know how to cure AIDS, but we knew how to contain it. Slight problem – it was illegal to advertise condoms… nothing ventured, nothing gained. OUR SHOES AREN’T THE ONLY THING WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO WEAR.

  1986

Kenneth’s first ad promoting AIDS awareness in 1986. The campaign was shot by famed photographer Annie Lebovitz and featured supermodels with their children.

As a renowned American designer and humanitarian, Kenneth Cole believes that "It is great to be known for your shoes. It is even better to be recognized for your soul." A business that began over 25 years ago out of the back of a 40-foot trailer, Kenneth Cole Productions has risen to the top of American fashion. Cole is famed for uniting his fashion instincts and business acumen with his philanthropic convictions. As Chairman to The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), and a founding board member of the homeless organization HELP USA, Cole has made it his business to fuse fashion with social action. He is also a board member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and The Sundance Institute.

Sometimes politically ironic and irreverent but always socially conscious and relevant, Cole's advertising has touched on everything from gun control and cloning to abortion and AIDS. Whatever the slogan and whatever the issue, Cole continues to abide by two mantras: "What we stand for is more important that what we stand in" and "We may not heel the world, but we hope to be an accessory."

If there's one thing Ke$ha knows how to do, it's tell stories. Here's a pretty good one: Two years ago, the aspiring pop singer and songwriter decided she wanted Prince to produce her first album. So, she found out his address and drove to his Beverly Hills home, where she paid the gardener five dollars to let her squeeze herself under his front gate. Then she hiked up the driveway (which was lined in purple velvet), let herself in through an unlocked side door, and rode the mirrored elevator up to the third floor where the Purple One himself was jamming with his band.

Ke$ha never did hear from Prince, but the incident speaks volumes about this 22-year-old newcomer's firecracker personality and determination.

She is currently at work writing and recording her debut album with executive producer Dr. Luke, who has scored No. 1 smashes for Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, and Flo Rida. After falling for her playful half-sung/half-rapped vocal delivery on a rough demo, Luke brought Ke$ha to RCA Records, which signed her in February 2009. The album — which will also feature Ke$ha's collaborations with veteran hitmaker Max Martin (Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears) and in-demand songwriter/producer Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, 3OH!3, Spank Rock) — is shaping up to be an edgy collection of hard-hitting electro-pop songs, made all the more irresistible by their high-octane punk energy and Ke$ha's irreverent lyrics and attitude.

Ke$ha credits her love for story-songs to spending her formative years hanging out with veteran songwriters in Nashville. Her mom Pebe, a former punk-rock singer, is a songwriter whose career took off in Music City in the late '70s when a song she co-wrote, called "Old Flames Can't Hold A Candle To You," became a hit for Joe Sun in 1978 and a country chart-topper for Dolly Parton in 1980. But by the time Ke$ha was born in 1987 (during a party in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, Pebe was going through a bad patch, struggling to support Ke$ha and her older brother through her music.

In 1991, Pebe moved the family back to Nashville, where she had landed a new publishing deal. Ke$ha saw the inside of a lot of recording studios. She attended a music school in the Tennessee countryside, took songwriting classes, and fell in love with country music greats Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Patsy Cline."

Often hailed the "Queen of British Hip Hop," Estelle is a multiple award winning singer-songwriter, rapper and record producer. A native of West London, as child, she was heavily influenced by her family’s passion for music. Her mother was a massive reggae fan and raised Estelle listening to her records. This genre served as the foundation for a musical taste that develop and foster Estelle’s own interest in music.

While today, her diverse tastes range from Kanye West, Nas, Jay Z, Redman and Rah Digga to Mos Def, Jill Scott, Common and Teddy Riley, Estelle asserts that her main influences lie firmly with two of the most important female figures in Hip Hop soul – Missy Elliot and Mary J. Blige. “I like female artists who show that women don’t have to strip off or compromise themselves to be recognized as musicians. I can match men head to toe,” she remarks. While it is clear music has always been a part of her life, Estelle only broke onto the music industry in 2004 with release of her first album, The 18th Day. Hit singles “1980” and “Free” immediately garnered praise and attention for the budding artist. Later in 2008, she assumed international fame through her collaboration record with rapper Kanye West, titled “American Boy”. Reaching Top 10 in countries worldwide, the song earned her a Grammy Nomination for Song of the Year. In addition, “American Boy” was listed as Number 7 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008. Since then, Estelle has continued to collaborate with some of the most prolific names in the music industry and gone on to release her 2nd and 3rd album. Her most recent album, "All of Me" currently continues to climb the charts with popular singles, "Freak" and "Fall In Love."

“Music is sunshine,” says Michael Franti, one of the most positive and conscious artists in music today. “Like sunshine, music is a powerful force that can instantly and almost chemically change your entire mood. Music gives us new energy and a stronger sense of purpose.”

“Music is something you can’t hold in your hands, smell it, taste it or even see it, yest somehow just coming together and feeling these little vibrations that tickle our eardrums can somehow lift us all up out of our most difficult moments in life to unimaginable heights.”

Franti’s singularly open spirit reflects his own eclectic and intriguing background. Michael was born to an Irish-German-French mother and an African American and American Indian father in Oakland, then adopted by a Finnish American couple who raised him along with their three biological children and another African American son. While studying at the University of San Francisco, Franti formed the punk band The Beatnigs, and later the far more hip hop-inflected The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Through it all, Franti has crossed all sorts of musical and physical boundaries in order to make music for everybody.

In the mid-Nineties, Franti first formed Spearhead, and increasingly in recent years, he's found his own voice musically and his own organic brand of popular success. Franti and Spearhead's last album, 2008's All Rebel Rockers -- recorded in Jamaica with legendary producers and players Sly & Robbie - became the biggest hit of Franti's career, hitting the Top 40 on the Billboard 200, and yielded his biggest hit, the Top 20 “Say Hey (I Love You).”

Michael Franti is not a man to openly chase success - in fact; he's not a man who even wears shoes(for the last ten years). Still, Franti has absolutely no problem hearing his music on the radio now. “When I was a kid, I used to listen to AM radio on family vacations in the car, and at family barbeques and my dad would leave the radio on. So songs that were the silly pop hits became a really meaningful part of my childhood - and of my adult life now. So when I think of the fact that there's some family out there on the beach in the summer together listening to `Say Hey,’ it makes me feel really good. The truth is a good pop song that makes you feel good can be something of value and meaning to people.”

For Franti, “To play for people and share your songs with them is to make a real connection. That’s why we play outside our shows for those who can’t afford to come inside. They need the songs too - maybe more. That’s the reality. And as a musician I was on tour with put it recently, “Our fans didn’t come to us from a reality show. They came to us from reality.” And so, we mean something in their lives. We’re the music they put on when they drive their little kids to school, or hang out with the person they love at night. There’s no higher honor. So they have an investment in the music. And that means so much because this music is very personal to me too.”

She now resides in New York City, where she works on FEED and other socially conscious and eco-friendly projects.

My journey to FEED started when I was a student. I knew what hunger was only through volunteering at soup kitchens with my family, but nothing could have prepared me for my first trip with the UN World Food Program (WFP) to Guatemala in 2003 as their Honorary Spokesperson. For me, it was one of the most eye opening experiences of my life. To see poverty and hunger firsthand, and only a three-hour flight from my home, was shocking. Food is so essential that it is unbelievable that every minute 16 people die worldwide of starvation, most of whom are under 5 years old.
